While we certainly get glimpses of that here in Oklahoma, our autumns often have a mind of their own. It’s not uncommon to have gorgeous golden fields and colorful trees while temperatures are still in the 80s.
The good news? You can absolutely achieve that timeless, cozy fall look without overheating.
As an Oklahoma family photographer, I always encourage my clients to choose outfits that are not only beautiful but also comfortable. When you feel comfortable, you naturally relax and that creates authentic, joyful photographs you’ll treasure for years to come.
Choose Lightweight Fabrics That Move Beautifully
One of the biggest styling mistakes I see is choosing heavy sweaters simply because they’re “fall.” Instead, opt for breathable fabrics that still give the appearance of autumn.
Some of my favorite fabrics include:
- Cotton
- Linen blends
- Gauze cotton
- Rayon
- Tencel
- Lightweight knits
- Flowy chiffon for dresses
These fabrics photograph beautifully because they create natural movement, especially during Oklahoma’s breezy evenings. A flowing dress or skirt catches the wind in the most magical way and adds softness to your images.
If the weather happens to cool down, adding a lightweight cardigan or textured layer is an easy way to bring in that cozy feel without committing to a heavy outfit.
Build Your Outfit Around Warm, Earthy Colors
Fall is all about warmth and richness. Instead of everyone matching in one color, choose a complementary color palette that works together.
Some of my favorite colors for Oklahoma fall sessions include:
- Cream
- Ivory
- Oatmeal
- Camel
- Warm taupe
- Chocolate brown
- Rust
- Terracotta
- Olive green
- Sage
- Dusty blue
- Mustard
- Deep burgundy
These colors blend beautifully with Oklahoma’s tall grasses, golden fields, gardens, and colorful autumn trees while allowing your family to remain the focus of the images.
Skip Bright White and Neon Colors
While a soft ivory or cream photographs beautifully, bright white clothing can often draw attention away from faces.
Similarly, bright neon colors, overly saturated reds, or fluorescent tones can create unwanted color casts on skin and compete with the natural scenery.
Soft, muted tones always create a more timeless gallery.
Add Texture Instead of Busy Patterns
Texture creates visual interest without distracting from your family.
Think about incorporating:
- Knit cardigans
- Linen dresses
- Cotton gauze
- Corduroy
- Denim jackets
- Lace details
- Velvet bows
- Woven accessories
When it comes to patterns, less is more. One subtle floral or small pattern can look beautiful, but avoid having multiple large patterns competing with each other.
Coordinate—Don’t Match
While identical white shirts and jeans have a place
Instead, choose one outfit you absolutely love (usually Mom’s dress) and build everyone else’s outfits around those colors.
For example:
Mom: Flowing rust dress
Dad: Cream button-up with khaki pants
Daughter: Sage dress with brown boots
Son: Olive henley with tan pants
Each outfit complements the others while allowing everyone’s personality to shine.
Dress for the Location
Every session location has its own personality.
Wildflower fields and tall grasses pair beautifully with soft neutrals and flowing fabrics.
Gardens look stunning with romantic dresses, earthy colors, and delicate textures.
Wooded trails complement richer autumn tones like olive, camel, burgundy, and rust.
Choosing outfits that fit the environment creates a cohesive, polished gallery.
Comfort Creates Genuine Smiles
One of my biggest pieces of advice is to make sure everyone—especially little ones—can move comfortably.
Children who are constantly adjusting itchy sweaters or uncomfortable shoes rarely enjoy being photographed. Comfortable clothing allows them to run, play, cuddle, and simply be themselves, which is exactly where the magic happens.
